Art Walk West to Highlight Creative Movement in West Dallas
Fifth Annual Edition to be Held on Saturday, October 19
The WEST DALLAS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE hosts the fifth annual edition of ART WALK WEST on Saturday, October 19, 2019. Participating artists, studios, artist-run spaces, galleries, arts organizations, and creative businesses will have their doors open for visitors from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to start at TRINITY GROVES, where maps and programs will be available. The event will end with a reception from 5 – 7 p.m. at ex ovo (414 Fabrication Street) and Sweet Pass Sculpture Park (402 Fabrication St). Art Walk West is free, open to the public and family-friendly.
ART WALK WEST celebrates the creative culture of West Dallas, including one of the city’s largest concentrations of artist studios, housed in the emerging Tin District. Visitors can embark on a self-guided tour of artist studios, galleries, exhibition spaces, outdoor sculptures, murals, dance classes, hands-on art activities and performances over the course of the afternoon. Creative businesses and restaurants will be open for a taste of local flavor.
In partnership with Art Walk West, WILD WEST MURAL FEST returns for its second year, presenting vibrant murals by artists –both local and visiting from around the world–on twelve West Dallas exteriors. Artists will produce murals over the course of the week leading up to Art Walk West.
Renowned Dallas gallerist and curator David Quadrini will curate a series of sculptures throughout historic buildings in the Tin District area.
Using the 150th anniversary of professional baseball as a point of entry, BUSH LEAGUE both celebrates and interrogates the history, industry and aesthetics of the sport by transforming Sweet Pass Sculpture Park into an impromptu sandlot. The baseball diamond becomes a stage set for a host of performances, sculptures, printed matter and film screenings. Presented by the San Antonio-based collective BUXTOOF and featuring Anthony Rundblade, Ryder Richards, Brock Caron, Lindsay Starr, Daedelus Hoffman, Brad Tucker, Hills Snyder, the Wheeler Bros, Danielle Georgiou Dance Group, Garrett T. Capps, Jack Sanders and the Texas Playboys Baseball Club along with other surprises and special guests!
ex ovo — a new project space and gallery emphasizing the vision of artists, facilitating relationships between peers, and educational programming— will present NEXT EXIT , an exhibition of photography and video by local artists: Trey Burns, Harris Chowdhary, Finn Jubak, and Jonathan Molina-Garcia. NEXT EXIT explores the artists’ research around Dallas’s myths, landscape, and the built environment through an interactive installation of viewing platforms and alcoves that visitors can explore to discover hidden artworks.
New to ART WALK WEST in 2019, the AT&T Performing Arts Center will present a variety of free, family-friendly community performances, dance classes and art-making activities. Highlights include The New Orleans Original Buckshop, a community dance class for all ages inspired by local choreographer Michelle Gibson’s “New Orleans Second Line Aesthetic” and accompanied live by the Big Easy Brass Band. Additionally, Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico will offer a series of family dance classes accompanied by a live Mariachi band. This programming is offered through the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s community outreach program, ArtsBridge – Powered by Toyota.
Little D Markets is curating a select group of vendors to pop-up at Trinity Groves during Art Walk West. Little D organizes markets around Dallas to spotlight the city’s makers, artisans and artists, activate underutilized spaces, and give shoppers an opportunity to support local.
In addition to their booth at Little D Markets, the La Bajada POP Garden (3016 Herbert St) will offer free art activities for families, including an opportunity to paint a still life of the garden’s bounty and harvest collages. Stay for farm-to-table refreshments like taco bites, and herb-infused water, and tours of the beautiful community garden. The POP garden at the Belmont Hotel will also be open for tours.
Additionally, there will be a chance drawing for a one-night stay in a suite at Hyatt House Dallas/Frisco as well as other exciting prizes.
ART WALK WEST is produced by the West Dallas Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Arts + Culture Magazine Texas Brooklyn Brewery, Blanks, Atmos Energy, Frost Bank, 3015 Trinity Grove, West Dallas Investments, Oaxaca LLC and Hyatt House Dallas/Frisco. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
